Introduction

While at The Ohio State University I had the opportunity to work for two amazing departments. College of Social Work & Engineering Career Services were instrumental in my improvement as a designer. Both challenged me to creatively communicate various events, organizations, and general information.

ECS Handbook

I helped create the yearly handbook for Engineering Career Services, making sure all information is clearly communicated. I redesigned the layout to make it easy for the next intern to take over smoothly after I had left.

Event Materials

A big part of my employment at ECS focused on designing for our events. Many of my projects were for signage, handouts, or logos of our various events.

Reflection

Problems that I ran into…
1. Being the only designer in my department.
2. Clearly communicating my designer-thoughts to non-designers.

How I pivoted…
1. I had to lean on my experience and trust it. I had to embrace the challenge with confidence in that I was qualified to make the decisions I was making. Since I wasn’t able to lean on other designers I had to be extra critical and confident in my designs.
2. Clear communication was key. As I spoke about my work I had to be sure I was being clear and not using confusing terminology. An important part of the communication was to remind myself that although there is a lot I could say/share, less would be more. Not overwhelming my coworkers was crucial.
